The Nissan GT-R is a true supercar, based on a Nissan motorsport heritage that stretches back over 40 years. It is the reincarnation of Nissan’s iconic high performance Skyline GT-R range, first produced between 1969 and 1974, and again between 1989 and 2002. Although today’s model no longer carries the Skyline badge, it has retained its predecessor's nickname: Godzilla!
Nissan GT-R power is delivered by a 3.8l DOHC V6 with twin (IHI) turbochargers to provide an awesome 360kW and 580Nm from all four wheels via a rear mounted 6-speed dual clutch semi-automatic transmission. Weight is minimised using hybrid body construction combining steel, carbon fibre and die-cast aluminium. Nissan's Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC-R) aids stability while three shift modes are available for different driving conditions. All of this gives the Nissan GT-R an impressive top speed of 311kph and a 0–100kph time of just 3.5 seconds.
But how do we know the Nissan GT-R is a true supercar? Well, it’s reported to have lapped Germany’s notorious Nurburgring in just 7 min 35 seconds. That puts it ahead of world leading monsters like the Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg CCR, Mercedes SLR McLaren and, last but never least, the Porsche 911 Turbo. With such achievements already behind it, it’s no surprise that after bestowing the Nissan GT-R with the honour of Car of The Year, Jean Jennings, of the US’s Automobile Magazine said of the GT-R, “What we love about the GT-R is that it refuses to compromise. It is not comfortable, it is not trying to make friends and it is not trying to influence people. It exists for one reason only - to go fast - and it does”.
Such blistering yet confident performance bodes well for the Nissan GT-R’s motorsport future. In modified guise, it has already started making its stamp on the world of motor racing. It replaced the 350Z as Nissan’s entry in the GT500 class of the Super GT race series for the 2008 season and it is planned to make the race version available for the 2010 FIA GT Championship season. The Nissan GT-R has also been employed as the official safety car for the 2008 Japanese Super GT series and the 2009 Australian V8 Supercars series.
As a driver’s car, the Nissan GT-R offers performance in just about every environment and situation. Whether on a racetrack or city street, driving snow or scorching heat, its advanced technology and dynamics give the driver incredible confidence and complete control.
If there’s one thing we know at Group1 Nissan, it’s that every Nissan GT-R we sell will be going to a very fortunate owner indeed.
